"I refer to these recordings as "dinner music" because we performed for people while they were eating dinner at a restaurant. The environment is quite noticeable, with the noise of a busy night in the background... glasses, plates, silverware, a squeaky door, and people talking...
Everybody has their own aesthetic about what makes music interesting. For some, the crowd noise might sound ugly and distracting. I feel that we were part of the dinner scene that night, and not necessarily the reason why people were there. For that reason, I can accept the background noise on the recordings as a part of the experience. Some were listening and enjoying, and some didn't seem to notice.
Hopefully, there was a soothing subconscious message in the music that quietly worked its way through to the attentive, a bit like telling dark secrets to a dog. The dog doesn't seem to care, but the person sharing the secrets feels better.
The solo violin piece is a quiet eulogy, made at my apartment in Central Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on September 13th, 2001. I think I was imagining spirits rising when I played it."
