Auquel on peut ajouter "Kicking Television", pour faire 2005. C'est un peu les agrégés du rock (Bowie, Lennon, Television, le Velvet, Dylan, voire LaMonte Young, tout y passe). Mais ils sont subitement devenus géniaux (sur Yankee Hotel Foxtrott, déjà...), et ça change tout, y compris dans notre manière d'écouter Bowie, Lennon, TV, etc. Comme osait De Kooning, "le passé ne m'influence pas ; c'est moi qui l'influence".

- Half Asleep "Just Before We Learned To Swim"
Découvert grâce à vous, hinah, ce moment musical quasiment schubertien - vous savez...., "la jeune fille et la mort".

- Oui Monsieur ! Il y a des limites au scandale
Une démo d'ex-collègues de boulot (guitare baryton, clarinette basse, batterie) que je serai peut-être aussi fier de posséder que celle de Bed dans quelques années. Leur musique ? Une espèce de jazz anguleux, très écrit, qui rappelle un peu John Lurie, les Lounge Lizards, etc.

- Yann Tiersen/Shannon Wright "s/t"
Avec tout le respect que m'inspire leur musique et leur démarche à l'un et l'autre, je n'arrivait pas à vraiment les aimer jusqu'à ce que paraisse ce disque. Aspirations peut-être contraires, mais souffle commun.

- New Order "Waiting For The Siren's Call"
Ils ont l'air d'être tellement confiants sur ce disque, ils pourraient se jeter à la mer avec ces chansons, on les suivrait.

- Mariene de Castro "Abre Caminho"
Grâce à l'année du Brésil, on a eu la chance de découvrir cette déesse-chanteuse, révélée par le neveu de Veloso, dont l'énergie attractive rappelle Elis Regina et Aretha Franklin. Océanique.

- Fela "Teacher Don't Tell Me Nonsense"
J'ai profité de la réedition de l'oeuvre de ce véritable fleuve musical, génial d'un bout à l'autre. L'impression de découvrir un monstre de la taille de Miles Davis, Marley ou Stravinsky.

- Morton Feldman "Rothko Chapel"
Une nouvelle interprétation de Christophe Desjardin et Jonathan Nott est venue enrichir la lecture que l'on peut faire de cette oeuvre ultime.

A stunningly beautiful album of songs by a terribly under-appreciated band out of Los Angeles.

- Various Artists "I Believe to My Soul" Leave it to Joe Henry to collect 5 masters of classic soul music and bring them back to the studio. Mavis Staples, Ann Peebles, and Allen Toussaint all destroy me on this record.

- The American Analog Set "Set Free"
Certainly bands have an undeniable fingerprint that bears their music along. American Analog Set's fingerprint is so chill and gorgeously understated that it would make me cry were I not smiling so broadly. Even when they rock out (as on "Cool Kids Keep") they're laid-back.

- Animal Collective "Feels"
Weirdly interesting, but not so weird as to be completely alienating. Animal Collective is the logical moving point of the Elephant 6 Collective to come before them. Viva animals.

- Bob Dylan "No Direction Home: The Soundtrack (the Bootleg Series, Vol. 7)"
Everytime I think I've heard all the Dylan I can stand something new comes out and floors me. On this one it's disc 1, with alternate studio takes and various leftovers that really display a very young Dylan becoming a master of recasting folk music in his own world-weary voice. It's astounding.

- Xiu Xiu "La Forêt".
Super quiet acoustic songs with dashes of weird electronica and blasts of bleepy noise. Moments of grandeur. Moments of bedroom quiet. Leave it to Xiu Xiu to construct something with this kind of sonic depth and somehow disguise it as a (mostly) quiet folky album like La Foret. & it all sounds like they had so much fun, even when Jamie Stewart sings so plaintively.

- Akron/Family "s/t"
Brooding bedroom music by a drunk ass sad group of folk devils. Beautiful songs but not too weepy and sappy either. The drum sound is amazing. And produced by M. Gira, no less.

- Okkervil River "Black Sheep Boy"
Okkervil is one of my all-time favorites. Bent, lyric songs. "For Real" slays on this one, and the accompanying video is amazing, slow, very weird animation. Will Sheff writes songs not like poetry but like short fiction and that's an interesting thing.

- Sufjan Stevens "Illinois"
Christ almighty is this good. A heavily orchestrated exploration of stateness with plenty of instrumentals, textures, sing-along moments, and groove to keep any listener interested. These are Songs.

- Andrew Bird "The Mysterious Production Of Eggs"
Andrew Bird writes songs like a man who really really understands what a song is. Even the absurdly simply numbers here (like "Fake Palindromes," a song with only 4 chords or so) seeth with an inner complexity. Much of it comes from his apparent interest in arrangements. Like Sufjan, arrangements here are important and flesh out the songs. But the songs themselves are amazing.
